Review : Catherine

The recent absence of post this weekend was because of this game, rented it and loved it so I had to play to finish at least one game ( no easy feat for this game ) so now that I finished one of the ending I’m going to review it.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is really simple but totally addicting, basically it’s a block pushing action puzzle game.

you main goal is to climb to the top of a block tower by moving blocks and making floor to keep going up, there’s some interesting rules like the edge rule that says “ if a block is touching another one by the edge the block wont fall down” and also the different kinds of block making every level different in some way.

but that’s not the whole game, apart of the climbing stages daytime events are more like a visual novel than a game yet the story and characters manage to keep you interested the whole time.

there are no more than 20 levels in the game but there’s tons of replay value.

my only complain is the difficulty, even on easy the game is really hard.

Story:

no here is where the game truly shines.

the story is so complex and full of twist, turns and mind games that will make your brain think really hard.

you play the role of Vincent a guy who is dating Katherine ( with a K ), after a night on a bar he suddenly meets Catherine ( with a C ) and now must make choices that will affect his lifestyle.

both K/Catherine’s are complete opposites and symbolizes the normal and used to lifestyle versus the new adventurous and complex lives making this game more like a way to think about the human mind and emotions.

I don’t know how to explain this but one thing for sure is it is complex and really good.

I cant say anything more without spoiling but the story is AWESOME!.

Graphics:

while there’s not much variety on the scenarios and the graphics could use a bit more work ( if your game is story driven and most of the time you see characters talk at least try to lip synch ) but the art style really shines and gives this game its unique feel that many games nowadays don’t have.

Overall:

Catherine is a good game overall and the mindfreaking experience is totally worth it, also the gameplay is fast paced and really clever.

the only real downside I could find was the difficulty, its way too hard and many players could be turned off before reaching half of the game.

still if you want a great story, great gameplay and great moments reflecting the human conscience this is a game for you.

8/10

o yeah and in case you didn’t notice the game is rated mature for its horror, blood, sex and alcohol content.
